Tarantula Snafu on German Train: 20 Live Spiders Forgotten by Passenger

A peculiar incident unfolded on a German train, when a routine inspection revealed a cardboard box packed with 20 live tarantula spiders that had been accidentally left onboard after a passenger disembarked. According to federal police in Stuttgart, the parcel was discovered on Thursday during an inspection in the town of Tuebingen.

The box, clearly labelled "Spiders and Scorpions", had been forgotten by a 31-year-old passenger who exited the train without collecting it. The train driver alerted authorities, and federal police officers were dispatched to meet the train at the station. Upon opening the parcel, officers confirmed that it contained 20 live tarantula spiders, all securely packed. Fortunately, the spiders did not escape, and there was no risk to passengers or railway staff.

The owner of the animals later arrived and collected them the same day. Police said that the passenger, who was distracted and had simply forgotten the box, would not face charges. Rail traffic was unaffected during the brief intervention, Stuttgart federal police said. While unusual, the episode was treated as an oversight rather than a criminal matter, as the spiders were properly declared and safely contained, police added.

This incident comes amid heightened attention on the illegal trade and transport of exotic animals in Germany. Earlier this year, customs officers at Cologne-Bonn airport intercepted a shipment of around 1,500 young tarantulas that had been smuggled into the country disguised as cookie or sponge cake consignments. In contrast to this incident, authorities in Stuttgart said the train incident involved no suspected trafficking and underscored the importance of passengers remaining vigilant about their belongings — especially when those belongings contain live animals.
