LPG Shortage Hits Western UP Construction Sector, Builders Seek State Intervention
Detailed Analysis
Construction Industry in Western Uttar Pradesh Hit by Liquefied Petroleum Gas Shortage
A severe liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) shortage in Western Uttar Pradesh has begun to take a toll on the region's construction industry, prompting the Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Associations of India (CREDAI) Western UP to write a formal letter to the state government seeking urgent intervention.
According to CREDAI Western UP, the twin threats of acute gas shortage and unchecked black marketing have been disrupting building activity across the Ghaziabad region. The builders' body alleged that domestic LPG cylinders are reportedly changing hands at project sites for anywhere between Rs 4,500 and Rs 5,000 — several times the regulated price — while even the refilling of smaller cylinders involves lengthy delays and costs upwards of Rs 400 to Rs 500.
Despite a recently announced ceasefire, conditions on the ground have yet to return to normal, making administrative intervention a matter of urgency rather than choice. The situation is particularly pressing due to the nature of the workforce that powers the construction industry. As the country's second-largest employer, the sector draws heavily on migrant labour — a population with limited financial cushion and few alternatives when work slows or stalls.
Supply chain disruptions caused by the fuel crisis have compounded worker availability concerns, creating a cascading effect that threatens both project timelines and cost estimates. CREDAI Western UP President Dinesh Gupta has been vocal about the broader implications, warning that unchecked black marketing and continued supply disruptions will not only hurt contractors and developers but will ultimately pass costs down to homebuyers.
| Comparison of LPG Prices | |---------------------------|------------------|------------------| | Regulated Price | Rs 4,500 - Rs 5,000 | | | Actual Price at Project Sites | Rs 4,500 - Rs 5,000 | | | Refilling Cost for Smaller Cylinders | Rs 400 - Rs 500 | |
The association expressed hope that the state government would respond swiftly, recognising the construction sector's outsized role in employment and economic activity across the region. CREDAI Western UP urged the administration to intervene promptly, curb black marketing, and restore supply to safeguard the industry and its workforce.
