Detailed Analysis
UltraTech Cement Surpasses 200 MTPA Target, Cementing its Position as India's Leading Cement Maker
Aditya Birla Group chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla virtually inaugurated three cement units of group flagship UltraTech Cement in Patratu (Jharkhand), Shahjahanpur (Uttar Pradesh), and Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, marking a significant milestone for the company. With these new units, UltraTech Cement's domestic cement capacity has surpassed 200 million tonne per annum (MTPA), exceeding its medium-term target and further solidifying its position at the top of India's cement industry.
In an address in Mumbai commemorating the company's achievement, Birla emphasized that UltraTech's growth is a testament to India's thriving manufacturing industry. He noted that the company's unprecedented expansion has made it the largest cement maker in the world outside China, with a capacity exceeding that of the US and the European Union. The company's journey from a capacity of 60 MTPA about a decade ago to over 200 MTPA today is a remarkable achievement.
UltraTech Cement has achieved its target of 200 MTPA primarily through a mix of greenfield and brownfield projects, as well as strategic acquisitions, including those of Jaypee, Binani, Century, Kesoram, and India Cements. The company's expansion has been driven by significant demand from housing and infrastructure projects such as roads, railways, and metro railways.
According to Birla, the last 10 years have been transformational for UltraTech and for India. The country's highway network has expanded by nearly 60 percent, while the metro network has grown by nearly 350 percent. Daily road construction has tripled to 35 kilometres a day. This unprecedented growth has elevated cement from a mere material to a national development asset.
| Company | Capacity (MTPA) | | --- | --- | | UltraTech Cement | 200 | | US | < 200 | | European Union | < 200 | | China | > 200 |
The company has set its sights on expanding its capacity further, with a target of 240 MTPA by 2028. The ongoing expansion is being funded by a Rs 16,000 crore capital expenditure. With its continued growth and expansion, UltraTech Cement is poised to remain a leader in India's cement industry.
