Detailed Analysis

Delhi Government to Conduct Annual Industry Survey

The Delhi government will initiate an annual industry survey in the national capital later this month to assess the manufacturing sector's status and future planning. According to a gazette notification issued by the Planning Department of the Delhi government last week, the industrial units covered by different Acts will furnish information in a prescribed format between April and September this year.

The industrial survey will cover factories and establishments registered under various Acts, including the Factories Act 1948, Beedi and Cigar Workers (Conditions of Employment) Act, 1966, Companies Act, 2013, Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, Societies Registration Act, Cooperative Societies Act, Khadi and Village Industries Board, and Directorate of Industries (District Industries Centre).

The survey's findings are expected to serve as a valuable resource for policymakers and planners, providing insights into capital formation and structure, employment patterns, input and output, value addition through various manufacturing activities.

| Quarter | Number of Factories in Operation (2020-21 and 2021-22) | | --- | --- | | 2020-21 | 2,407 | | 2021-22 | 2,115 |

According to the last annual survey of industries in Delhi, the number of factories in operation decreased by 12 per cent from 2,407 in 2020-21 to 2,115 in 2021-22.

Under the exercise, two sets of questions have been designed for collecting information. The first set of questions will focus on the assets and liabilities of units, employment and labour costs, receipts, expenses, input items - indigenous and imported, products and by-products, and distributive expenses, among others. The second set of questions will relate to information on different aspects of labour statistics, such as working days, mandays worked, absenteeism, labour turnover, man-hours worked, earnings, and social security benefits.

The statistics officials will make field visits to verify the information furnished by a unit, by going through business records and other records of the unit and seeking clarifications, at the premises where such records are kept, from the owner or manager of the enterprise. The survey will cover the period between April 2024 and March 2025.
